OUR TODDLER ONES COMMUNITY

A Space Brimming with Language, Music, Art and Joy

The Ones classroom is filled with rich and descriptive language, music sung and played and danced to, and many opportunities for artistic expression. There is also plenty of outdoor time built into the daily schedule to ensure that children are exposed to the seasons, to the dynamic Williamsburg community, and to the life that exists on the surface of and under the East River (which runs right through our backyard.)

Spanish Immersion is available in the Toddler Ones classroom. At this age, children easily grasp language.

Refining Physical Coordination

Through a variety of daily experiences, a one-year-old is able to practice gross and fine motor control. They learn to use their hands to pinch, grasp and pull. With their newfound ability to walk, they have the freedom to explore independently. They can choose a work from the shelf that a Guide has previously presented and that intrigues them, work with it for a while, and then put it back. Ones are busy developing their muscles, working on their balance, and moving with greater intentionality.

The Beginning of Caring for Self and the Environment

Children in this program begin to practice the self-care skills required to eat and dress more independently. They become active members of the classroom community, helping to keep the space organized and tidy. They enjoy cleaning up spills, and cleaning the table after snack or making a mess. They learn not to be afraid of spills and messes. In addition, as they begin to develop their social awareness, they are able to practice sharing a classroom space with friends.

Spanish Immersion continues in the Toddler Ones classroom. At this age, children easily grasp language. One Guide speaks only in Spanish, the other only in English.

Attention to Detail and Two-Way Communication

Our Guides are trained to be keen observers of each child in the classroom in order to know who they are and how they operate in the world. Guides are eager to hear about the child’s life at home: both the joyful instances of growth and understanding, as well as well as the concerns that parents might have. Guides see themselves as partners with parents in providing support to children when and where it’s needed.
