The Williamsburg Montessori Elementary program is growing! Our Lower Elementary program welcomes children 6-9 years of age. As we grow, and families wish to continue, we will be expanding to Upper Elementary for 9-12 year old students.
Maria Montessori’s son, Mario, continued his mother’s work with younger children through the Montessori Method, and expanded to include the child’s “sensitive period” between 6 to 12 years of age, creating global lessons enabling the student to move from the concrete to the abstract in a full and well-developed elementary Montessori curriculum.
In the Elementary program, children are given the Five Great Lessons of what Maria Montessori referred to as “Cosmic Education”. which includes profound lessons, such as the origin of the universe, life on Earth, the emergence of humans, and the history of math and writing. These lessons establish the basis for the rest of their learning throughout the ages of 6-12. They begin to study different cultures in depth, as well as the continents, great literature and scientific concepts through botany, geology and zoology. The children also continue with practical life, language, math and history, caring for their classroom, assisting others in the school community, and solidifying reading, writing and mathematical concepts to abstraction.
